Roughing Followed by False Start

authored by Anonymous NIRSA Flag Football Rules Book 22nd Edition Rule 10-1-5 Page 79

Third and 18 at A’s 2. A-1 throws an incomplete legal forward pass and is roughed by B-1 in A’s end zone. A accepts the roughing penalty. After the Referee establishes the new series and signals ready-for-play, A-2 false starts.

Roughing the passer is enforced 10 yards from the previous spot, A’s 2, to A’s 12, and carries an automatic 1st down. The new zone line-to-gain is A’s 20, making it 1st and 8 at A’s 12. Because the false start occurs after the ready-for-play, enforce it after the zone line-to-gain has been established: 5 yards back to A’s 7 without resetting the line-to-gain. The final result is A’s ball, 1st and 13 at A’s 7. Rules 10-1-5C and 10-3-1.
