Third and 8 at A’s 32. While A-1’s legal forward pass is in flight, A-3 illegally contacts B-2. B-1 intercepts the pass at B’s 15, flag guards at B’s 25, and is deflagged at B’s 35. A accepts B-1’s flag-guarding penalty. What options does B have for A-3’s foul?
Because B gained final possession and B-1’s foul occurred after the change, B may keep the ball under clean hands only by declining A-3’s foul. If B accepts A-3’s foul, the live-ball fouls create a double foul and the down is replayed: A’s ball, 3rd and 8 at A’s 32. If B declines A-3’s foul, enforce B-1’s flag guarding 10 yards from B’s 25, the spot of B’s foul, to B’s 15. The final result depends on B’s choice: replay the down by accepting A’s foul, or decline it and give B the ball, 1st and 5 at B’s 15. Rule 10-3-3 Exception 1.
